Why did this 1947 Texas ship explode while people watched?

On the morning of April 16th, 1947, a crowd gathers on a Texas dock to watch a ship burn. The smoke is a strange, beautiful orange. At nine twelve, the ship vanishes in a fireball felt two hundred and fifty miles away.
