The Comet That Outshone the Sun in 1882

In the autumn of eighteen eighty-two, a comet appeared that was so bright you could see it in broad daylight, burning right beside the sun. It rose in September, climbing out of the dawn with a long silver tail. Then, on the seventeenth, it swung in so close to the sun that it should have been lost in the glare.
