The 1888 Children's Blizzard: 40 Degrees in Minutes

On the morning of January twelfth, eighteen eighty-eight, it was so unusually warm across the northern plains that children walked to school without their coats. By that afternoon, the air itself was killing them. A wall of arctic cold came down out of Canada with almost no warning.
